PURPOSE:To allow the execution of multicolor display with one piece of picture element and to increase a contrast as well as to improve a response speed by attaining the series synthesis of coloration by plural sheets of laminated liquid crystal cells and color polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display element 1 is constituted by crimping two sheets of the liquid crystal cells 10A, 10B by, for example, the red polarizing plate 2 and the ordinary black polarizing plate 3 an interposing the blue polarizing plate 4 between the respective cells 10A and 10B. The transmission state of the respective liquid crystal cells is adjusted by the combination of plural sheets of the laminated liquid crystal cells and the polarizing plates, by which the coloring state of the polarizing plates corresponding to the respective cells is controlled. Namely, the respective colors set in the respective polarizing plates are selected by impressing a voltage to the liquid crystal cell corresponding to the polarizing plate of a desired color with respect to the transmitted light and simultaneously the coloration by the plural cells and polarizing plates is selected, by which the transmitted light is subjected to coloration successively at the time of the passage through these cells and plates and the color synthesis is executed. The execution of the full color display with one piece of the picture element is possible in this way and the stressing of the contrast of the light is enabled by setting black on the polarizing plate. The high-speed responsiveness is assured by using a ferroelectric liquid crystal material. |
