PURPOSE:To improve the processing efficiency by separating picture information into areas in response to the characteristic of a picture accurately and applying binarizing processing in response to the characteristic of the picture to each area. CONSTITUTION:An identification means 2 inputs a picture data S2 outputted from a line buffer 1 synchronously with a prescribed clock to obtain characteristic information in a local area including a noted picture element thereby discriminating the property specific to a character section or the characteristic representing a photographic section, the type of the picture is identified and the result is outputted as an identification signal S3. A selection means 4 selects either a 1st threshold level Th1 such as a dynamic threshold level from a 1st threshold level calculation means 32 or a 2nd threshold level Th2 from a dither matrix or the like from a 2nd threshold level calculation means 33 or a fixed threshold level Th3 in response to the identification signal S3 and a signal S6 representing a code such as a Laplacian outputted from a Laplacian maximum value calculation circuit 22 and outputs the selected threshold level as a threshold level signal Th for binary processing. |
