摘要 PURPOSE:To improve the uniformity of orientation, the durability of the element and the contrast between a dark state and a bright state by providing a specific relation between the film thickness of an orientation control film and the average surface roughness of an underlying layer. CONSTITUTION:A ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal is the ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal which generates the bistable orientation states varying on a high- temp. side and a low-temp. side within the temp. range of the ferroelectric smectic phase. This liquid crystal is the ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal of the bistable orientation state on the low-temp. side generated on falling of the temp. from the bistable orientation state on the high-temp. side. Inequality I is preferably satisfied when the film thickness of the orientation control film is designated as d. Inequality II is preferably satisfied when the average surface roughness of the underlying layer is designated as S. In addition, the relation of inequality III is provided. The liquid crystal element, the bistable orientation state on the low-temp. side of which exhibits the high stability to impact and distortion, and which exhibits the large contrast of the bright state and the dark state is obtd. in this way.
