PURPOSE:To automatically selecting and using a structured program diagram(SPD) symbol corresponding to programming language in use by inputting the file name of a symbol pattern information filing device. CONSTITUTION:The file name used in the symbol pattern information filing device F is obtained with the input 6 of the file name and a symbol name with the input 7 of an input symbol name to display the SPD symbol on a picture display device D. Next, the check for validity of a symbol name is performed at a symbol name analysis part 8, and the symbol name is obtained again with the input 7 of the symbol name when an error exist. When the symbol name is correct, the symbol name is converted into a code decided in advance at a symbol name encoder part 9. Next, a symbol fundamental pattern read-in part 10 obtains the display pattern of the SPD symbol with the code encoded at the encoder part 9, and it is displayed on the display device D.
