The electro chemical fuel cell assembly has flat plate cells in which there is a ceramic solid electrolyte (1) of a stabilised ZrO2 material, with one surface (2) having a porous oxygen electrode that forms a positive electrode. A negative electrode (3) is formed of Ni/Zr.O2. The electrodes are overlapped with positive and negative surfaces in contact and are set onto a carrier surface (5) that is produced of the porous ceramic material. A further layer fully embeds the plate in the carrier material. ADVANTAGE - Compact construction suitable for mass production.
