The machine for separating reclaimable materials e.g. packaging, plastic sheet, paper etc., employs conveyors (4a, 4b, 4c) which transport tipped refuse (1, 2) to an inspection area after primary vibrator sorting (3). The refuge (1, 2) is then selectively deposited in collection silos (5) by clearing units (6, 19) under the overall direction of computerised controller (7). Separation is by print colour recognition using fibre optic conductors (8, 9) placed above and alongside conveyor (4c) at distances commensurate with the sizes of waste items being conveyed, automatically adjusted by signal from photocells (14, 15). Enhanced recognition extending to material classification is undertaken by mass spectrometer (17). ADVANTAGE - Separates metallic objects and materials which are not bio-degradable from general household waste, high efficiency, improved inspection accuracy.
