The invention relates to a process and a device for polling control unit data, such as diagnostic data or status data, by means of a diagnostic connection (17) connected by communication lines (16) to a plurality of control units (10-12) in a vehicle. A test device (20) can be connected to the diagnostic connection (17). Information concerning the type and number of control units present are stored in a central unit (15). The test device (20) first polls the central unit (15) by means of a standardized access and then, by means of the data obtained, accesses the individual control units in automatic sequence or under manual control. Thus, a simple test device can be used, without prior knowledge of the type of test devices incorporated in a vehicle, to access these test devices in the desired sequence for diagnostic purposes.
