Method of controlling continuous nitration of aromatic hydrocarbons by regulation of the feed of the nitrating agent into a nitrator is performed so that the intensity of feed of the nitrating agent is periodically adjusted so that the potential difference between two electrodes of inert material reaches or oscillates around an experimentally pre-determined optimal value of between 10 to 300 mV. The principle of the apparatus for carrying out this method is based in the construction of the sensor, which contains two electrodes whose active part is made of inert material and one of the electrodes is equipped with an electrically non-conductive cover, the inner space of which is connected to the outside by at least one hole.
