PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of perfumery, easily, in high yield and purity, in one step, by condensing a specific intermediate available easily at a low cost with malonic acid in the presence of a basic catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The alpha- or beta-monocyclohomofarnesylic acid of formula II is produced by the condensation reaction of 4-(2,6,6-trimethyl-1- or 2-cyclohexenyl)-2- methylbutanal of formula I (one of the dotted lines is double bond and the other is single bond) with malonic acid in the presence of a basic catalyst (e.g. triethylamine, trimethylamine, etc.). The compound of formula III which is one of the compounds of formula I is also useful as a lasting perfume-imparting or perfume-modifying agent. |
