PURPOSE:To improve the diffusion combustion by controlling the strength of swirl and the flow speed of combustion gas to each proper value by varying the passage area of an injection hole which communicate a main combustion chamber and a swirl chamber in synchronization with the engine revolution and particularly by setting the passage area to the min. before a compression top dead center. CONSTITUTION:A swirl chamber 4 having a spherical section is formed in the vicinity of the edge part of a main combustion chamber 2 of a cylinder head 1. In the lower part of the swirl chamber 4, a mouthpiece 7 having an inclined injection hole 8 is arranged. In this case, the passage area of the injection hole 8 can be varied by a swirl valve 9. In other words, the swirl valve 9 consists of a valve head 9a which is opposed, keeping a prescribed gap T from the wall surface of the injection hole 8 at a valve opening position, stem part 9b which slightingly contacts a valve guide 11, and a screw 9c projecting from the valve guide 11. The swirl valve 9 is driven through an eccentric am 14 and a form 12, in synchronization with the revolution of the engine, and the passage area is set to the min. before a compression top dead center.
