[Also in Division C3] A thermal barrier material is left by the combustion of a silicone rubber obtained by vulcanizing a mixture of a vulcanizable silicone gum, a sodium silicate and an inorganic compound of melting point higher than that of the sodium silicate. In examples, silicone rubber compositions are prepared containing as fillers sodium metasilicate or a sodium silicate of Na: Si ratio 1:1, nickelous oxide and, optionally, a reinforcing silica. The compositions are extruded as a sheet or coated on to a woven glass fabric, cured (optionally), then heated at 1400‹ F. to give a rigid ash of the same volume as the rubber. Instead of the nickelous oxide there may be used ZnO, AiF 3 , MnO, Cr 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , cryolite, calcined alumina, nepheline syenite, lithium aluminium silicate, or ceramic fluorspar. |
