The device consists of a shifting register (7), an evaluation block (8), an impulse transmitter (6) and an optical sensor (5) positioned on collecting vehicle (4) with a collecting mandrel (3). The sensing of the position of clay tiles (2) and of the housings (1) is performed by the optical sensor (5) prior to the collecting itself. For this purpose the output of this optical sensor (5) is connected with shifting register (7), whose output is connected with an input (c) of a block (8) for evaluation of thickness of the clay tiles and housings (1). The movement of the collecting mechanism is sensed by the impulse transmitter (6), whose output is connected with shifting input (6) of the shifting register (7) and with the input (d) of the thickness evaluation block (8). On the basis of the measured thickness it is discerned, whether in front of the collecting mandrel (3) there is the clay tile (2) or the housing (1) edge.<IMAGE>
