A composite fibrous product i.e. plied or intertwisted yarn or knitted, woven, or non- woven fabric for manufacture into washable and/or disposable wearing apparel such as socks and diapers, comprises at least one end of bacteriostatically treated filamentary yarn and at least one end of untreated or conventional yarn mechanically interengaged i.e. fashioned together in contiguous interlocking relationship. The plied yarn may be formed into the fabric or the two forms of yarn may be combined by the fabric structure e.g. in the warp and weft respectively. The treated yarn may be formed from a polymer resin e.g. polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polyamide, polyacrylic or rubber in which is incorporated a compound which includes two chlorophenol groups separately linked to a common atom e.g. 2, 2'-thiobis (4, 6-dichlorophenol) and 2, 2'-methylenebis (3, 4, 6-trichlorophenol) or hexachlorophene, as described in U.S. Specification 2,919,200. The untreated yarn may be of natural e.g. cotton or like cellulosic, wool, or synthetic fibre and the bacteriostatic agent may migrate (particularly when the product is moistened) from one end of yarn to the other and/or to associated materials such as tufts in a pile fabric. |
