PURPOSE: To increase porosity to increase the capacity for holding an active material so as to enhance battery performance by heating a foam structure to a temperature at which nickel carbonyl gas decomposes to form a nickeled foam structure, and forming nickel foam while leaving an open-cell nickel mesh behind. CONSTITUTION: A open-cell foam structure of a pyrolytic material is put in an atmosphere containing nickel carbonyl gas and is heated to a temperature at which the nickel carbonyl gas decomposes. Nickel from the nickel carbonyl gas decomposes on the foam structure to form a nickeled foam structure. Next, the nickeled foam structure is sintered, and the foam structure is removed from the nickeled foam structure to form nickel foam while leaving behind the isotropic open-cell mesh of an interconnecting nickel wire. Thereby the nickel foam having a small bore and a uniform structure to improve battery performance is realized. |
