Process for the preparation of 6,13-dioxopyrazino[1,2-a:4,5-a'] diindole derivatives, and new products thus obtained, having an inhibitory activity on the mechanisms of cell differentiation. The invention relates to the chemical synthesis of pentacyclic indole derivatives of general formula A such as 2,9-dimethoxy-6,13-dioxopyrazino[1,2-a:4,5-a']diindole (A where R = R' = CH3O). These products are obtained by condensing two suitably substituted molecules of 2-indolecarboxylic acid under the action of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, or by modifying compounds thus synthesized. All the products of the present invention have the general formula A: <IMAGE> where R and R' represent H, OH, CH3, a halogen or a methoxy or acyloxy group. These products inhibit erythroid differentiation of leukaemia cells of the K562 strain. They are biological reagents and therapeutic agents in diseases related to the pathology of cell differentiation and to spontaneous or induced disorders of gene expression.
