Novel esters of 5-nitro-quinoline having the general Formula I wherein R represents a furyl radical which may be substituted by a nitro group or a halogen atom may be prepared by esterifying 5-nitro-8- hydroxy quinoline with the appropriate furoyl chloride, usually in a slight excess. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a solvent, such as pyridine. Pharmaceutical compositions contain the above esters in the presence of a diluent or carrier, such as lactose. The esters are usable as bacteriostats, bactericides, fungicides, amoebicides, trichomonacides and anthelminthics. The compositions may be administered orally or topically.</p> |
