An appliance for applying a paste-like substance, is made in two parts (1,4). The first part (1) is a hollow cylinder with a nozzle (3) at one end. A piston (6) inside the cylinder (1) is used to force the substance out through the nozzle (3). The piston (6) has a piston rod (7) which slides in an axial hole in the second part (4). The piston rod has saw teeth formed along its length. A leaf spring (10), bent to the form of a shallow V, fits in the hole in the second part (4) with the corner (13) of the V shape projecting through a slot in the wall. One end (11) of the leaf spring engages a tooth on the piston rod whilst the other end (12) abuts against a stop. By depressing the corner (13) of the leaf spring, the piston (6) can be driven with a stepwise motion in order to extrude the substance through the nozzle (3). USE - Applying sealing compounds etc.
