Metal strip storage device - having winding and support cars driven independently by electromagnetic motors

Metal strip storage device is made up of a movable winding car (2) and separate support cars (8) which have electromotive drives consisting of a current carrying part (18) arranged on the guide track (3,3') and a passive permanent magnet (22) fitted to the respective car. USE/ADVANTAGE - For intermediate storage of strip as it passes from one process to another, e.g. etching plant to annealing furnace. The device compensates for the different feeding speeds in the two plants. The winding speeds can be changed whilst maintaining a uniform strip tension and avoiding any sudden tensile stresses. The distance between the support cars can be altered to optimise strip surface properties.
