In prodn. of alpha, omega- bis-perfluoroalkyl alkanes of formula (I) Rf - (CH2)2n - Rf, (a) 1 mol of cpd. of formula RF-(CH2)n-Z' (II) is reacted with 1.2-4 mols of finely divided Mg, in an anhydrous aprotic solvent, at atmos. pressure or up to 1 MPa and at 40-140 deg. C, with stirring, (b) excess metal is converted to an easily separable salt and is sepd., and (c) (I) is sepd. from the liq., at the same time as or after removal of (part of) the solvent, and is opt. purified further. Rf = 6-12C perfluoroalkyl, or 6-15C perfluoroalkyl contg. at least one ether O; n = 2-6; Z = Br or iodine. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are obtd. in good yield. (I) are lubricants, esp. for use in ski wax compsns.
