A layer of metal is formed on a substrate (14) by circulating a bath of molten metal (16) in a vessel such that molten metal is projected above the upper surface of said vessel, transporting a substrate along a path which traverses the upper surface of said vessel; and transferring the molten metal to one surface of the substrate by directly or indirectly contracting the molten metal with the surface of the substrate.
