[Also in Divisions F3-F4] Glasses and other materials which soften before melting, e.g. silica, felspar, pyroxene. basalt and wollastonite are melted and refired in a rotary kiln 1 (see Divisions F3-F4) after discharge from a rotary preheater 2 over a vibratory refractory plate 19 and burners 18. Molten material passes into a holding furnace 12. The preheating temperature is 400-600‹ C. and the rotary kiln 1 is kept at 1200-1600‹ C. The preheater may incorporate a continuous conveyer for the charge through which hot gases pass downwardly. A typical charge comprises 100 parts sand, 27 parts dolomite, 39 parts soda ash and 1 part oxidizing agent, to which is added 50% cullet and 2% water spray.
