A reagent useful in immunoassays and the like comprises micro particles of latex (polystyrene) containing therein a water-insoluble fluorophore such as a laser dye, with the fluorophore being essentially absent from the particle surfaces. The particles can be sensitised with specific binding reagents such as antibodies. The fluorophore-containing particles exhibit constant fluorescent yield, and provide improved labels useful in sensitive quantitative assays. |
