PURPOSE: To easily and at a low cost form a coupler of a low loss by arranging an optical wave guide removed of a clad material to the groove of a tool in a prescribed shape to heat with a male-type die and fusing the wave guide by heat and pressure. CONSTITUTION: A star coupler manufacturing tool consists of lower and upper part members 1 and 3, and the groove 2 consisting of parallel center part 2a and to conical type side terminal parts 2b and 2c is formed at the lower part member 1. On the other hand, the male type die 4 consisting of a center part 4a and two conical type side terminal parts 4b and 4c is formed at the upper part member 3. Within the groove 2 at the lower member 1, the optical waveguide removed of the clad material is arranged to be heated to a temperature higher than the glass transition point of the optical waveguide to fuse under pressure, fitting the male type die 4. Thereby a coupler of high mechanical strength and a low loss is produced with high productivity. |
