PURPOSE:To produce an alcohol in high selectivity by hydrogenating a carbonyl compound in the presence of a Ru catalyst prepared by impregnating a Ru- containing solution in an inorganic oxide carrier, fixing with an alkali and reducing with a reducing agent. CONSTITUTION:A Ru catalyst having extremely high activity, high selectivity and long life is used as a catalyst for the hydrogenation of a carbonyl compound. The Ru catalyst can be prepared by impregnating a Ru-containing solution (ruthenium chloride or ruthenium acetate solution) in an inorganic oxide carrier (e.g. alumina or silica), drying the solution, sprinkling 1-2 times equivalent of an alkali solution corresponding to the water-absorption of the carrier, stirring and drying the mixture and reducing with a reducing agent such as methanol or sodium borohydride. The obtained alcohol is useful as raw materials for various chemical industries, a high-performance solvent, etc. |
