PURPOSE: To prepare a hydrogenation catalyst for maleic anhydride to tetrahydrofuran andγ-butyrolactone by depositing catalyticaily active oxide material expressed by a specified formula on a porous and inert support. CONSTITUTION: A substantially inert support with a diameter of about 3.18 mm is brought into contact with adequate amount of a liquid metal sol, and the support wetted to a certain extent with source liquid absorbed but no existence of liquid on its surface, is prepared. This wet support is impregnated by being brought into contact with catalytically acid oxide power, with a diameter of about less than 0.3 mm, expressed by formula (wherein M is an element selected from IIA-VA groups, VIII group, Ag, Au, IIIB-VIIB groups, lanthanum or actinium; (b) is 0.001<b<500, (c) is 0.001<c<500, (d) is 0<=d<200; (x) is necessary number of oxygen to satisfy an essential condition for an atomic valence of other element.
