A brake drive mechanism for a video cassette recorder is described. The mechanism comprises: a flat cam, a lever, a spring, main brakes and another spring. The flat cam includes a slot forming an integral part thereof, and revolves when it receives the energy of rotation of a loading ring. The lever includes a projecting portion intended to be guided inside the slot of the flat cam, and also a convex curved portion at its other end so that the lever is interlocked with the flat cam. The spring imposes a one-way force on the lever permanently, and the brakes perform the braking or brake release functions on a reel and on a receiving clutch. The other spring is intended to actuate the brakes when the force from the lever does not reach the main brakes. According to the present invention, the structure is simplified and consequently the labour time and unit price of the products are reduced to a large extent. <IMAGE>
