Described is a device for taking tissue samples, with a biopsy needle which has a needle element (21) with a recess (23) at the distal end and an outer tube (22) surrounding the needle element, and which inserts an insertion unit into the tissue from which samples are to be taken. The invention is characterized by the fact that the insertion unit inserts the needle element and the outer tube into the tissue together in a position in which the outer tube is held over the recess, the insertion unit then retracting the outer tube on completion of the insertion operation to a position behind the recess, and the insertion unit lastly pushing the outer tube over the recess again.
