A facade system for a building consists of a metal or wood sub-structure mounted on the outer wall (1) and on which panels (3) are fixed. A ventilation space is created with a heat insulating layer (14) adjacent to the wall. A rough cast coating (16) can be applied without the problem of joints or seams showing through if the sub-structure consists of a series of floating wooden or metal mounting strips (3) located at a distance from the wall (1).
