A method of making a coiled accumulator electrode includes stacking electrode and separator strips on an elongate guide 140, engaging one end of the strips with a mandrel 156, rotating the mandrel to coil the strips therearound and varying the position of the guide relative to the mandrel so that the portions of the strips in the guide are maintained substantially tangential to the portions of the strips coiled on the mandrel and so that there is no relative sliding movement between the strips and the guide. The mandrel is split diametrally and one half is withdrawn before the strip ends are offered up to it. A jet of air from a nozzle 160 wraps the end of the strips around the mandrel half, whereupon the other half is advanced to secure the strips. As winding proceeds, the guide 140, which is mounted on rollers 62, is advanced by drive rollers 63, 64 and pivots about a shaft 155 as the diameter of the coil increases. A jack 157 applies a compressive load on the coil. When coiling is completed, the coil is located in a cylindrical cavity formed by a member 158 in position 158<SP>1</SP> and a recess at the end of the guide 140. The member 158 then advances with the guide to a work station, where, after the mandrel has been withdrawn, it is inserted in a metal casing. In an alternative embodiment, the guide; instead of being pivoted, is lowered horizontally as the coil diameter increases so that the uncoiled portion of the strips is always tangential to the coiled portion, Fig. 2 (not shown). The stack of strips is held in the guide either by magnetic or vacuum means. |
