The instrument for applying a paste-like substance consists of a housing (1) with a container (5) for the substance. The instrument is brought into the use position by depressing the end knob (21). This knob (21) forms the end wall of a cylinder (22) which is connected by a rod (14) to a ram in the container (5). The knob (21) slides in a sleeve (23) which is fitted in the extension (2) of the housing (1). When the knob (21) is fully depressed it is held in the depressed position by the spring fingers (27) of the sleeve (23) which engage a groove (32) in the cylinder (22). The knob can be released by depressing the sleeve (23) so that the spring fingers (27) are forced radially outwards by the conical surface (30) of the end wall (6) of the housing extension (2).
