New asymmetrical 2,2-bis-aryl-hexa:fluoro-propane(s) - prepd. by dehydration-condensn. of 2-aryl-hexa:fluoro-2-propanol and aromatic cpd. in presence of hydrogen fluoride

Asymmetrical 2,2-bis-arylhexafluoropropanes of formula (I) are claimed, where X1,X2,X4,X5 = H, 1-5C alkyl, Hal, COOH or OH; X3 = 1-5C alkyl, F, COOH or OH; Y1-Y5 = H, 1-5C alkyl, Hal, 1-5C haloalkyl, COOH, OH or amide gp.; the Ph gp. with the X substits, (Ar) is different from that with Y gps. (Ar'); if at least one of the Y gps. is OH, none of the X gps. is OH. Cpds. (I') are claimed, in which at least one pair of adjacent X or Y gps. form a cyclic anhydride system. (IA) (with no COOH substits.) are produced by dehydration condensation reaction of Ar-C(CF3)2-OH (II) with Ar'-H (III) in the presence of HF; (IB) (substd. with COOH gp(s). and Me gp(s).) is produced by similar condensation reaction, followed by oxidn. of Me to COOH. Pref., X1 and X5 = H, and X2 + X4 = 2 H atoms, 2 Me gps., 2 Hal, 1 H and 1 Me or 1 H and 1 Hal; at least 3 Y gps. = H; condensation reaction is carried out at 50-200 deg.C with mol. ratio (III):(II) = (1:1)-(10:1) and mol. ratio HF:(II) = (5:1)-(100:1); aryl gp. in (II) is 4-hydroxyphenyl, 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethyl or -dichloro-phenyl, 3,4-dimethylphenyl, 4-methylphenyl, 4-fluorophenyl or 3,4-difluorophenyl.
