The matrix display features a circuit (22) to set up a long display period (3T) and a circuit (23) to subdivide this into image-periods (4T/5, T, 6T/5). The display period contains a number of image-periods of different time duration which define the time during which the bias-signals are applied to the pixel. - The brightness or depth of colour of each of the pixels, which may be combined into a basic display element, is controlled through the long display period. The brightness or depth of colour of the pixels is defined by the effective bias applied0 between the 2 conductors (x and y) between which the liquid crystal material is placed.
