PURPOSE:To obtain a high density carbon compact in a high yield of carbonization by molding a starting material mixture of a carbon material with a precursor of carbon, carbonizing or graphitizing the compact and carrying out the carbonizing stage under immersion in a soln. of a thermoplastic precursor of carbon. CONSTITUTION:A starting material mixture of a carbon material such as coke, graphite or carbon fibers with a precursor of carbon such as pitch, phenol resin or coal tar is kneaded and molded. This primary compact is carbonized or graphitized to obtain a carbon compact. The whole or a part of the carbonizing stage is carried out under immersion in a soln. of a thermoplastic precursor of carbon. By this method, the carbon compact is prevented from being made porous by the vaporization of a volatile component in the precursor of carbon or a decomposition product at the time of carbonizing the primary compact in an inert gaseous atmosphere.
