The hydraulic control device for vehicle trailer brakes has a flow control valve (16) that supplies pressurised fluid via a brake control piston (45) to a sump (14). When the brakes are applied, the control fluid flow is interrupted and fluid flows via a check valve (33) to the brake cylinders (B). The brake control piston (45) separates two chambers (48,49), the piston movement forcing fluid from one chamber (49), via throttles (55,58) to a return channel (60). A pressure reservoir (51), connected to this chamber (49) maintains it at a higher pressure. USE/ADVANTAGE - Fixed throttling of the control fluid resulting in brake overload, is eliminated.
