The coupling is used to couple the axially abutting ends of at least one pair of optical fibres (7,8). The abutting optical fibre ends are each received in a longitudinal slot in a respective holder 14,15), with a press element pressing each optical fibre (7,8) against the bearing surface provided by the slot. Pref. the two holders (14,15) are received within a spring sleeve (13) or a rigid hollow profile, holding them together, each holder (14,15) pref. having a cylindrical cross-section and held in a give angular position by an orientation element. ADVANTAGE - Ensures accurate axial alignment of coupled optical fibres.
