[Also in Division C2] Herbicidal compositions contain as essential active ingredient an aryloxymonothioacetic ester represented by the formula (1) wherein R, denotes a methyl radical and R 2 denotes a methyl or ethyl radical together with a carrier or diluent for the active ingredient and if the carrier or diluent is a solvent, a surface active agent. The above general formula denotes both the aryloxymonothioacetic S-esters and O-esters. The active aryloxymonothioacetic esters specified are 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxymonothioacetic O-methylester, 2- methyl - 4 - chlorophenoxymonothioacetic O - ethylester, 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxymonothioacetic S-methylester and 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxymonothioacetic S-ethylester. The active ingredient may be employed with other known weed killers, e.g. 2, 4-dichlorophenyl-4-nitrophenyl ester; 2, 4, 6-trichlorophenyl-4-nitrophenyl ester; 2, 4-dichloro-6-fluorophenyl-4- nitrophenyl ester; 4, 6-bis (ethylamino)-3-methylthio-1, 3, 5-triazine and 4, 5, 7-trichlorobenzthiadiazole-2, 1, 3. The aryloxymonothioacetic esters are particularly effective against weeds which grow in paddy fields and in this respect it is preferable to apply the aryloxymonothioacetic ester in an amount 1-20g/are when used alone and in amount 0.5-10g/are when used in combination with known herbicidal compounds. The herbicidal compositions may be used in the form of a dust, emulsion, wettable powder, granules or aerosol.
