Chlorination of polyolefins involves (a) mixing a finely divided polyolefin with an anticoagulating agent, and (b) chlorinating the mixt. in a multi-stage process in presence of a free radical accelerator. The anticoagulating agent is TiO2, talc, SiO2 or polystyrene sulphide. The mixt. may also contain a heat transfer medium, esp. KCl or NaCl, in ratio of polyolefin:anticoagulating medium;heat transfer agent of 100:50-200:10-30; the ratio of polyolefin:anticoagulting medium is 1:1. The polyolefin is esp. high or low density polyethylene or polypropylene. The 1st and 2nd stages of the chlorination are under the action of UV radiation of wavelengths 3000-4000A. An alkyl chloride, esp. (m)ethyl chloride, is formed as by-prod. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use of liq. or gaseous media is avoided. The chlorinated polyolefins are suitable for prodn. of adhesives. |
