A reel comprises a hub and a pair of flanges, one of which is transparent and provided with a continuous annular recess on its outer face, for the reception of a separately formed non- transparent identifying ring. The recess containing flange 10, so-called front reel flange, is formed with inwardly projecting spaced-apart tongues 22 which together define a substantially cylindrical surface. The other or back reel flange 12 is formed with mating inwardly projecting tongues 36, these tongues being formed at the outer edge of a stepped rim 32. The hub is preferably of substantially I-beam crosssection, the web 50 of the hub being formed with spaced-apart arcuate slots 62 for the reception of the tongues 22 and 36. The hub and flanges are secured together by means of rubber-like cement, i.e. epoxy resin, provided along the mating surfaces of the tongues 22, 36 and between the inner flange 48 of the hub and spaced apart protuberances 38, 44 provided on the inner face of the back reel flange 12. The identifying ring 18 comprises an annular disc having a depending inner wall 98 which engages a gap between the inner edge of the flange 10 and the outer surface of the inner hub flange 46. Protuberances 104 are provided spaced apart about the lower edge of the wall 98 and engage below a rim 28 formed in the inner surface of the flange 10. The outer edge of the ring engages a bead 90 formed on the outer surface of the flange 10, the ring being snapped into position. A semi-circular projection 110 is formed on the lower surface of the ring and engages a recess 114 in the flange surface to ensure relative movement does not occur. The hub may be made of aluminium and the flanges and identifying ring of plastics material. |
