METHOD OF IMPROVING THE ADHESION BETWEEN A COATING ON A GLASS ARTICLE AND A POLYVINYL BUTYRAL MATERIAL

This specification is directed to a method of improving the adhesion between a coating (22) on a glass article (12) and a polyvinyl butyral material (26). the method includes the steps of subjecting the coating (22) on the glass article (12) to a coating operation in which a thin layer of chromium oxide (24) is placed over the coating (22). Thereafter, the chromium oxide (24) coated glass article (12) is subjected to a bonding operation which employs heat and pressure in order to bond the article (12) to the polyvinyl butyral material (26). In accordance with preferred teachings, the layer of chromium oxide (24) has a thickness from about 25 angstroms to about 100 angstroms.
