The invention comprises nitroarylether-ohydroxy-monocarboxylic acids of formula wherein Ar 1 and Ar 2 represent mononuclear or polynuclear aromatic radicals, and X and Y represent hydrogen, C 1-4 -alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or halogen, and wherein the nitro group is in the p-position to the ether group and the carboxyl group in the o-position to the hydroxyl group, but not in the o-position to the ether group. These compounds may be prepared by reacting an aromatic mono-nitrohalogen compound whose nitro group is in the p-position to a halogen atom with a trialkali metal salt of an aromatic dihydroxy-monocarboxylic acid in which one hydroxyl group is in the o-position to the carboxyl group, the reaction beinge effected at a temperature below 120‹ C. in a polar organic solvent. The following compounds are prepared in the example: 4-(p-nitro-o-ohlorophenoxy)- salicylic acid; 5-(p-nitro-o-chlorophenoxy)-salicylic acid and 5-(p-nitrophenoxy) salicylic acid. |
