1,174,340. Character recognition. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 14 June, 1967 [15 June, 1966], No. 27418/67. Heading G4R. Character recognition apparatus scans the character twice with the same line pattern, obtaining data representing character size and position during the first scan, selects as significant during the second scan only signals representing the coincidence of the character with predetermined portions of the line pattern, and compares significant signals generated by the character with stored data representing reference characters. A character is scanned twice in a raster of vertical lines h, the sensed signals at the positions a to g in Fig. 1 being gated during the second scan to be compared with stored reference signals to identify the character. (The lines b, c, e, f are each simulated by a series of short vertical lines coinciding with the lines h, of course.) The position and dimensions of the grid a to g are determined from the vertical positions of the character top and bottom and from the character width, all determined during the first scan. By means of two lamps, two photo-cells and partially separate lens systems, a single scanner performs the second scan for one character simultaneously with the first scan for the next. |
