PURPOSE: To provide a shaft seal assembly that is resistant to heat caused by friction through the provision of a lip seal that causes lubricating oil retained by an oil ring and an oil seal to absorb and diffuse heat generated within the oil ring. CONSTITUTION: A lip or dust seal 50 has a lip 54 that rotates with a guide ring 24 and slidably and sealingly engages an oil ring 18. An annular spacer ring or washer 60 is placed to rotate with the guide ring 24 and prevent any collapse of the lip seal 54. The lip seal 54 and the washer 60 then frictionally engage that side of the oil ring 18 which is exposed to lubricating oil and faces them directly. The lubricating oil absorbs and diffuses heat caused by the frictional engagement within the oil ring 18. |
