PURPOSE: To easily vary the wavelength of a laser having doping super-lattic active layers by unequally pumping the laser electrically and/or optically. CONSTITUTION: A variable-wavelength semiconductor laser comprises doping super-lattic active layers 180 sandwiched between low-refractive index layers 170, 190 and grown on a substrate 160. To unequally optically and/or electrically pump, this laser pumps at least one region (at least 10%) of the active layer 180 up to a mean exciting level. This makes the frequency variable.
