PURPOSE:To realize a high luminance image by providing a polarization beam splitter, a polarization rotary element for converting an undesired polarization component from the polarization beam splitter to a desired polarization component, and a reflecting means between a light source and an optical separating means. CONSTITUTION:Between a light source 1 and an optical separating means 8, a polarization beam splitter 2, a polarization rotary element 3 for converting an undesired polarization component from the polarization beam splitter 2 to a desired polarization component, and reflecting means 4 - 7 are provided. A light beam emitted from the light source 1 is separated into a P polarization component and an S polarization by the polarization beam splitter 2, and a desired polarization component is allowed to travel straight or converted as to its route by the reflecting means 4 - 7. On the other hand, an undesired polarization component is converted to a desired polarization component by passing through the polarization rotary element 3, and thereafter, allowed to travel straight or converted as to its route by the reflecting means 4 - 7 and made incident on the optical separating means 8. Accordingly, a light beam which is made incident on the polarization beam splitter 2 is all made incident on a liquid crystal light valve 12 as a desired light. In such a way, a high luminance display can be realized. |
