PURPOSE: To prepare a cosmetic composition, comprising a sugar lactone glucuronide as a glycosaminoglycanase inhibitor and capable of stimulating the hair growth, especially the growth of terminal hair on the human scalp by topical application thereof to mammalian skin or hair. CONSTITUTION: This cosmetic composition comprises (A) 0.0001-99wt.% compound of formula I (A<1> and A<6> are each H, CH3 , CH2 OR<1> , formula II or III or CH=O; B is OR<3> , NHR<3> , a lactone bond to the 1- or the 6-position, or formula IV, with the proviso that one thereof is formula IV; R<1> is H, a 1-20C alkyl, a metallic cation, NH or an alkanolamine cation; R<2> is a residue of the molecule bonded through another C atom at the 2- to the 5-position so as to form a lactone; R<3> is H, CH3 or a 2-4C acyl), e.g. 2-O-β-D-glucopyranosiduronyl-L- galactono-1,4-lactone and (B) 1-99.999wt.% vehicle. The composition comprises the compound of formula I in an amount sufficient to increase the hair growth of a rat by >=10%, especially >=20% when topically applied for 3 month at the longest in a rat hair growth test.
