The subject of the present invention is the tomato nitrate reductase structural gene, as well as vectors for cloning and expression of the said gene and a process for enhancing the assimilation of nitrates in plants, characterised in that a DNA sequence or a vector according to the invention is introduced into cells from these plants under conditions permitting its replication and its expression.
