The present invention relates to a machine tool spindle. This spindle comprises a fastening body 11, a rotary shaft 13 mounted in the body by rolling-contact bearings 14, 15, the shaft being equipped with a receiving cone 16, with a tool secured to a tie rod 17, with a clamping rod 18, and with a clamp 19. It furthermore includes a hydraulic piston 24 for controlling the clamp and a hydraulic piston 52 for compensating for loads applied to the rolling-contact bearings when the clamp is opened. This piston 52 is associated with a movable stop piece 52a and with a return spring 52b. This spindle is advantageous owing to the fact that the rolling-contact bearings are no longer subject to axial stresses when tools are replaced. <IMAGE>
