A handled contact member (25) is arranged in the body (21) of the socket. The contact member (25) co-operates with a contact electrode of a plug plugged into the socket receiving area (24). The jack contact member (25) is a U-shaped piece of metal whose arms form two contacts (26, 27) which grip the contact electrode (13) of the plug (12) between them. The first contact (26) is longer than the second (27) and its outer end curves concavely inwards to form a spring contact (35) to co-operate with the shoulder (16) of the contact electrode (13). The spring contact (35) extends into the receiving area (24) by about twenty per cent of its inner diameter. When the plug is inserted, the front contact portion (36) of the second contact (27) forms a spring contact with the head of the electrode (13) after it has passed over the spring contact (35) of the first contact (26).
