The reading and coding device for spools of thread with codes on the spool flanges (10, 11) accessible to reading heads contains a device with a mechanical feed (39) via a delivery chute into which the spools (3, 3') are fed. Spools are fed to a reader (6) irrespective of their sizes. The codes are read and translated by a microprocessor controlling a printer which delivers the code in the form of a bar code ticket simultaneously with output of the spool. USE/ADVANTAGE - For automatic vending machine, for spools of thread using low cost code reading arrangement.
