The invention relates to a device for the treatment of infectious waste occurring in hospitals. In order to ensure that the chain of infection is interrupted as early as possible, i.e. that the risk of infection by release of infectious organisms, bacteria, etc., is kept at a minimum, the invention proposes a compact disposal unit (1) which accordingly comprises a sluice chamber (2), a spray unit (10) arranged therein, a waste comminuter (3) and a microwave chamber (4) in which the moistened infectious waste (12) is sterilised. In the microwave chamber there is provided a transport path (5), e.g. a conveyor belt (5a) or a conveyor screw (5d), which is surrounded by a microwave-permeable housing (15). The infectious waste is irradiated with microwaves along this transport path (5) by a plurality of microwave emitters (16). The entire disposal unit (1) is sealed toward the outside to prevent escape of organisms and steam. The sterilised infectious waste can be treated in the same way as normal household refuse. <IMAGE>
